Yes, the interest rate is variable, so it can go up or down.

How do I open and manage my account?

  • The account can be opened in branch, by post or online.
  • This is a passbook-based account and can be operated in branch or by post at your own expense.
  • Available to private individuals.
  • Available to UK residents only.
  • Limits apply to cash deposits and withdrawals (see Savings Terms and Conditions).
  • You can save from: £5,000.
  • Maximum Balance: £450,000 (Subject to an individual’s total overall savings balance with The Society does not exceed £450,000).

Can I withdraw money?

  • You are allowed a maximum of 2 account based withdrawals each society year (1st November to 31st October).
  • Withdrawals, closure or transfers to another account with us are subject to 180 days’ notice. You will be given a maximum of five working days to make the withdrawal once the 180 days’ notice has been served.
  • Cash withdrawals are limited to £2,500 per day.
  • Withdrawals will not be allowed without the passbook.
  • Faster payments can be made to a nominated UK bank account in the account holder’s name.
  • Withdrawals can be made by post (cheque only) and must include a signed letter requesting the amount. Cheques will only be made payable to the account holder(s).
  • The minimum withdrawal allowed by cheque is £10.
  • The minimum CHAPS withdrawal £5,000 and will incur a £25 administrative fee.

Additional Information

  • Individuals can hold a maximum of one individual and one joint Notice 180 Monthly account with the Society.
  • We pay all savings interest gross – no tax is deducted. You are responsible for paying any tax due based on your individual circumstances. Tax rules may change in future.
  • Please note: The maximum deposit permitted in a Notice 180 Monthly account is £450,000.
  • The maximum combined deposit across all accounts with The Stafford Building Society is £450,000 per customer.
  • Interest is paid away on a monthly to a nominated bank.
  • Your savings are protected up to £85,000 per eligible person with the FSCS compensation scheme.
  • It’s worth noting that any of our accounts can be withdrawn from sale at any time and without notice.
