How do I open and manage my account?

  • Available to private individual UK residents aged 18 years or over only.
  • The account can be opened in branch, by post or online.
  • This is a passbook-based account and can be operated in branch or by post at your own expense.
  • If you open the account online, a passbook will not be issued. You can manage your account online including obtaining deposit and
    withdrawal information (if applicable).
  • You can add funds using any of the following methods: Cash deposit, bank transfer/faster payment or cheque ONLY.
  • Transfers from an existing Stafford Building Society account are NOT permitted.
  • Limits apply to cash deposits and withdrawals (see Terms and Conditions).
  • You can save from a minimum of £25,000 up to a maximum of £450,000.
  • A 14-day cooling-off period applies to this account. This means that if you change your mind, you have 14 calendar days to close the account without notice, charges or loss of interest. Day one begins on the date the account is opened.
  • You can hold a maximum of one individual and one joint Notice 365 account with the Society.

Can I withdraw money?

General account restrictions

  • This account allows a maximum of one withdrawal per Society year (1st November – 31st October).
  • Withdrawals, closure or transfers to another account with us are subject to 365 days’ notice. You will be given a maximum of five working days to make the withdrawal once the 365 days’ notice have been served.

How to withdraw/close your account:

  • In branch
    • You can withdraw from or close your account using any of the following methods: cash, cheque, Faster Payment, CHAPS, or internal transfer. Withdrawals and closures cannot be completed in branch without your passbook.
  • By post
    • You can withdraw from or close your account using any of the following methods: cheque, Faster Payment, CHAPS, or internal transfer.
    • All requests must include your passbook.
    • All withdrawal and closure requests must be made using either the “Postal Request” or “Closure” forms. These forms can be downloaded from our website or requested from us.
  • Online
    • You can withdraw from or close your account using any of the following methods: Faster Payment, CHAPS, or internal transfer.
    • All withdrawal or closure requests must be made through the online portal messaging service. A member of the Online Team will contact you once the transaction has been completed.

Payment restrictions:

    • Cash withdrawals/closures are limited to £2,500 per day. No notice is required for cash withdrawals/closures up to £500. Cash withdrawals/closures between £500 and £2,500 require at least 24 hours’ notice.
    • Cheque withdrawals can only be made payable to the account holder(s). The minimum cheque withdrawal is £10.
    • Faster Payment withdrawals can be made to your nominated UK bank account. Payments are made free of charge. The maximum withdrawal amount is £75,000. For payments over £75,000, a CHAPS withdrawal/closure will need to be completed.
    • CHAPS payments can be made to your nominated UK bank account. The minimum withdrawal amount is £5,000. There is no maximum withdrawal limit. A £25 administration fee applies.
    • Internal transfers can be made to another existing Stafford Building Society account held in the account holder’s/account holders’ name(s).

Additional Information

  • We pay all savings interest gross – no tax is deducted. You are responsible for paying any tax due based on your individua circumstances. Tax rules may change in future.
  • The maximum combined deposit across all accounts with The Stafford Building Society is £450,000 per customer.
  • Your savings are protected up to £120,000 per eligible person with the FSCS compensation scheme.
  • It’s worth noting that any of our accounts can be withdrawn from sale at any time and without notice.

*AER: The Annual Equivalent Rate shows what the earnings on your savings would be if interest was paid and compounded once each year.
