Incoming Chief Executive Officer brings decades of financial leadership experience as the Society prepares to close an expected record-breaking year.
Stafford, UK – 13 November 2025 – The Stafford Building Society’s Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Sean Humphreys as its new Chief Executive Officer. Sean will officially join the Society on 1st December 2025. He will work alongside the current CEO, Steven Jones, until Steven’s planned retirement, at which point Sean will take on full responsibility for leading the Society into its next chapter.
Sean brings over 30 years of experience in the financial services industry, having held senior roles at MBNA, Bank of America, Lloyds Banking Group, and The Very Group. His background spans both traditional banking and digital-first businesses, giving him a broad perspective on evolving customer needs. He also holds Non-Executive Director roles in the community, including with Cheshire FA and the Cheshire Community Foundation.
Joanne Hindle, Chair of The Stafford Building Society, said:
“We welcome Sean to his new role and very much look forward to working with him as the Society continues to grow in serving our Members, their developing needs and changing life goals.”
Joanne also added:
“As Steven prepares for retirement, the Board would like to express its sincere thanks for his outstanding leadership. He has guided the Society through a period of strength and stability, with the Society anticipating a record year for lending and savings. While we are pleased to have several more months working together, we extend our warmest wishes in advance for a long and fulfilling retirement when the time comes.”
Sean Humphreys, incoming CEO, said:
“As I step into the role of Chief Executive at The Stafford Building Society, I’m proud to lead an organisation with nearly 150 years of unwavering commitment to its Members and communities. As a mutual, we exist not to serve shareholders but to serve our Members. We help families save, buy homes and build brighter futures. I look forward to working with our trusted and committed team to ensure we continue to reinvest in our people and purpose. Together, we’ll keep building a better Society for colleagues, Members and families for generations to come.”
Steven Jones, current CEO, said:
“After eight enormously rewarding years with The Stafford, I have, with no small amount of regret, taken the decision to retire. It has been a tremendous honour to serve an organisation with such a proud heritage, founded on mutual values that have endured to this very day.
I am immensely proud of what the Society has achieved during my tenure and would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks to colleagues for their dedication, professionalism and unwavering commitment, and of course to our Members for their continued trust, support and engagement.
As I hand over to Sean, I do so with complete confidence that his experience, leadership and strong community focus will ensure the Society continues to thrive as it embarks on its next chapter. I look forward to following its progress with great pride and affection.”
The appointment marks a key moment in the Society’s continued progression. Following an expected record year for growth, the leadership change comes at a time of increasing interest in finance that supports local communities and social purpose. Sean’s appointment supports the Society’s ambition to grow responsibly while continuing to deliver long-term value for members. His wide-ranging experience and community involvement position him well to lead the Society into its next phase with confidence and purpose.
Over the coming months, Steven and Sean will work closely to ensure a smooth and effective handover.
